THE FLOWER
Fairest, Choicest and Sexiest Part of Anything
Colloquial language has always had the flower as the fairest of them all, or if a woman is radiant, we refer to her as blooming.
While it's a big step back to biology classes,it was an interesting process to learn what it is that we're really enthused about. Flowers, fair flowers. We know about petals, and pistils and stamens ....but did you have any idea that there is a formula that represents the flower?
Ca5Co5A10-ooG1.
So the whole point of a flower being pollination, for reproduction, this can only happen at a specific time: anthesis, which is similar to what we think of in an animal being 'in heat.'
So while the pistils and stamens are the male and female parts of the flower, some flowers like the dandelion can self-pollinate. And what a surprise when you receive a flower like the sunflower, to know that it's not really a flower at all but an influoresence --a collection of flowers to make a flower head.
FLOWER FRAGRANCE usually affects us strongly as our brains can sort through thousands of odours in our olefactory system. It's interestingly located in the primitive brain, the area responsible for self-preservation, aggression and repetitive behaviour. "Messages from the senses travel so swiftly through the brain that imaging machines such as the PET and fMRI can't keep up."
Fragrance is created on the surface of plant petals, leaves and tissues by some 50 to 100 chemicals of some 1,000 identified by scientists. Roses generate more than 80 distinct fragrance compounds. Cyclical fragrance intensity is dependant on what the flower wishes to attract: daytime pollinators such as bees and butterflies or nighttime such as a moth to a stargazer lily. And scent is directly related to lifespan, so think about that when choosing the gardenia or wondering why commercially-grown roses smell less that those hung over the garden fence.
Amazing colour attracts the hummingbird, while the honeybee will head for yellow or purple, flies or ants to dark colours and bats couldn't give a darn as they can't see it anyway, but if it's big and white it will help them find it at night in the dark. The spots or stripes on tulips or alstromeria can serve as street signs, pointing the way to the nectar, and even more amazing is the fact that some flowers have ultraviolet rings, like the black-eyed susan. Bull's eye!
FLOWER FANTASIA
Each flower is fantastical, some moreso than others. The lotus --a water lily species-- typically closes up and sinks underwater at night and then rises and opens at dawn. Symbolizes creation and rebirth. The white lotus blooms at night and is the only plant to fruit and flower simultaneously.
FEW OF WORLD'S LARGEST FLOWERS
While the world's largest single flower is the rafflesia, the world's largest flower is the titan arum. Commonly known as the Corpse Flower , because its scent is comparable to decaying flesh, it was found in Indonesia in the late 1800s. As an influorescence it can weigh 170 pounds and reach 10 feet.
If we could see the miracle of a single flower clearly, our whole life would change.--Buddha Siddharta(founder of Buddhism)
THE FLOWER: YOU SEXY THING
There is a lifetime's work to learning about flowers and pollination and genus and....but the connection of flowers and romance lies inherently in the function of flowers. And as we know, form follows function. So for some sexy tidbits about flowers, this is a researcher's delight. And I must say, I've thoroughly enjoyed the trip through floral fantasia.
The orchid gets its name from the Greek, 'orchis' meaning 'testicle' because of the psuedobulbs.
The Madagascar orchid needs a moth with a one-foot tongue in order for successful pollination.
Underground tubers of the terrestrial orchid are used to make ice cream in Turkey, know as 'fox-testicle' ice cream.
Vanilla flavouring (vanillin)is derived from the vanilla orchid (sheath), which is derived from the Latin 'vagina'. There are some 110 species, mostly in Mexico.
INDIAN FLOWER BLOSSOMS ONCE IN A DECADE
The Neelakurinji flowers (Phelobophyllum Kunthanum) have blossomed in southern India in the Kerala District for the first time since 1994.
The purple flowers started opening in September and will continue well into December, covering 250 acres in all.
