HISTORICALLY, ANCIENT Greeks paid tribute to Rhea, the Mother of the Gods, each spring. Later the British paid homage to mothers on "Mothering Sunday," the fourth Sunday of Lent. In North America, the first Mother's Day was celebrated locally in West Virginia in 1907 and becoming an official nationwide celebration by an Act of Congress in 1914. In the United States the American flag is to be displayed on government buildings and at private homes "as a public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country."While we have followed the US in many areas, I don't think we copy their public show of affection...too Canadian, eh?
Julia Ward Howe--who wrote the lyrics for of the Battle Hymn of the Republic--suggested a national Mother's Day in 1897, but it wasn't to receive recognition until 1907 when Philadelphia's Anna Jarvis convinced her local church parish the recognize the special place of all mothers, subsequent to the death of her own mother. The white carnation was selected as the symbol, being Mrs Jarvis' favourite flower to represent the sweetness, purity and endurance of mother love. The red carnation now symbolizes a living mother; white, a deceased mother.
