I've learned from trying to work with webmasters how frustrating it can be to enthuse the idea of your site to a designer, who does just that:designs.If you want to deviate at all from the flash presentations and the glitzy ad-sheets, it can be a bit scary in new territory and not going along with the norm. It's easy to think of yourself as a web noodle.

The thing is, we're all web noodles at the start. I started trying not to be terrified of this internet-thing in 2000. A year later, I was surfing for tutorials in my spare time; and there was quite a bit of it in the flower business after September 11th. A small start with a basic editing software attached to a nutriceutical company got me interested in the the possibility of a website. After using the basic eVISION click-and punch-system for a couple of years before it was disbanded, I tried to work with a local business that was selling a self-edit software package. After a tedious seven months wasted trying to learn their new system, I was going nowhere. And nowhere was where I could stay for all time as there was virtually(tic) no support and the company was so fledgling in hooking into the idea of build-your-own that they had only a few design aspects created and no behind-the-scenes business tools.

Next, I tried coaching with a webmaster, but when I thought my page idea was pretty basic it took weeks to accomplish and then I was told that a graphic artist should have prepared the material and then the webmaster could code-copy. Sort of similar to a bookkeeper doing data entry after you've done all the organizing and decision-making. After three different experiences and the costs, I was glad to undertake this educational experience that will stand me in good stead for years to come.

WEBSPEAK IS NOT A WEB BUSINESS

And three lashes with a web noodle if you think that websites come from the web-speak--the pictoral language we can't speak.(Click 'view', select "source") A young woman came into my shop one evening when I was working on my site: "I'm going to study web design," she said. When I asked her what that was, exactly, her view was that it was comparable to a graphic artist. When I opened 'source' for her, she changed her career path when she realized that web design was what created all the html coding.

Websites come from having something to say. Sure, they evolve into being sales tools with a much bigger reach. Think of a big company such as Watkins and its sales force, and then consider the web-reach in comparison to the Watkins' salesmen that used to go around door-to-door.

The thing is that content is king, and the glitzy ad sheets don't offer any. Of course, if you're already a big established company like Home Depot or Martha Stewart,you're already branded into the consumer psyche so the website is the sales tool for click and punch ordering. Content is extra, and because you're already number one in the search engines (if anyone needs to search anymore). But, you get the idea...

The possibility of a website business that will take time to grow just the same as a non-virtual business. It's important not to need a webmaster to change copy randomly, or if you've had a creative spurt, that you don't need to make that call and put up a few hundred dollars to add another page, change a picture etc. Time-lag between ideas and changes is a consideration, especially if you have special event-celebrations as I do in the flower business, of if you want to put up announcements or special sales flyers.

It's fear that holds us back and if you've ever viewed source of any site, who on earth wants to be hunched over a keyboard trying to learn the webspeak and create a new pictoral language that most of us don't know how to write or read?
